This, however, does not mean they won't function during a bad weather, but probably they will not be able to illuminate for the whole night. The solar panels of Petal solar lights come with rechargeable battery which stores the Sun's energy during the day and uses it at the night to provide light. Petal solar lights function automatically and light up as it gets dark, so you do not have to worry about switching them on at dusk. They also switch off on their own at dawn. The petal of the lamp acts as a reflector and gently increases the brightness of the lamp's light. Use these lamps to lighten up your garden or install them indoors for some extra fun. Just take care to plant them properly so that their stems are not blocked and they receive adequate sunlight to be charged. The lamp will then ensure to brighten up your surrounding with its special LED lights in a very eco friendly manner. |

Superior e-bike to attract gen-next towards biking Posted: 20 Jan 2012 02:16 AM PST Nikonian Bar: In what could be considered as happy marriage between the academic and the practical, a diploma thesis for the Department of Industrial Design at the University of Technology in Brno (Czech Republic) and the manufacturing excellence of the Czech bicycle company, Superior, has resulted in the working prototype for an e-bike. Superior was looking out for a sporty, carbon fiber bike but they settled for a bike made of duralumin that oozes sportiness. The designer, Vojtěch Sojka, has made it look something like a cross between a BMX bike and the Specialized Stumpjumper. But this bike holds a lot more than meets the eye and is definitely worthy a close second examination.
Superior e-bike The frame is almost entirely one single molded unit. The seat tube houses the battery which can run the bike for a comfortable 50-60 km. The fork has internal suspension but the minimalist design makes the rear rely on fat tires for a comfortable ride. Sprung saddles will further add to the rider-comfort for long journeys. To maintain the overall balance of the bike, the electric motor has been placed at the center, perfectly at the center of gravity of the bike. Thus, though it would seem easier to place it in the hub, it is located in the shell of the bottom bracket for better balance.
The part of the design that would raise eye-brows in curiosity and interest is the absence of the seat-stays. This has been done by the designer to fit in the carbon belt drive. The belt replacing the traditional chain was a great idea with a future in both style and functionality. Carbon belts cannot be broken and re-linked. An opening section in the seat-stay is necessary to fit the belt. And thus, in order to accommodate the belt in the design, the seat tubes had to be eliminated to put on the belt easily. There is still a line of thoughts that wants removable, bolt-on seat-stays like the ones found on the older Dutch bikes so that the entire weight over the rear wheel is not borne by the chainstay and the bottom bracket joint. A tiny controller to control the motor and get a reading of its various parameters has been fitted on the handlebars. There is also a proposal to replace this intelligent controller with a cellphone to control the bike. The whole bike is much lighter as compared to the standard e-bikes and offers greater control and stability. The diploma thesis project was appreciated with the Dean’s prize and the design has received accolades through adoption by Superior company. Sojka's bike comes as a whiff of fresh air among the hundreds of concepts that are springing regularly. |
Basic House slips in your pocket for instant refuge anywhere, anytime Posted: 20 Jan 2012 01:06 AM PST Pragya Bhargavi: With the rise in the population and decrease in the livable space all around the world, there is a high demand of a house that is much simpler to make and can be easily relocated as and when required. After giving a serious thought to the present need of the people, designer Martin Azua has come up with the simplest type of shelter called the Basic house.
Basic House Basic house resembles a tent and can be inflated within no time to create an awesome living space. At other times when you don't need it or want to shift somewhere else, simply fold it and keep it in your pocket. This lightweight house can prove to be a boon for people who cannot afford a conventional home or need a temporary shelter due to some reasons. Basic house is golden in color and has been made out of metallic polyester. An attractive feature of the house is that it can actually protect you from the outside temperature. If you want to remain warm, the brilliant tent interacts with the heat of the sun or your own body heat to keep you well-insulated, warm and cozy. On other days, when the weather is hot, simply turn it inside out and the surface will deflect the sun's rays, thus keeping the inside cool. The house has already been featured at MoMA and Vitra Design Museum. It is an excellent way of creating immediate shelter. Use it during calamities for homeless people or take it to a picnic for some fun. Its easy usage and great functionality will soon make it an incredible product. Via: Inhabitat |
Parcel D: A single-family private greenscape housing within the rush of city life Posted: 19 Jan 2012 09:47 PM PST Ruchika Pahwa: There have been several attempts to create architectural designs that very well fit the single-family homes in an urban environment. But, here is an innovative attempt dubbed as Oppenheim Architecture + Design, to review the building design and topography by the architectural firm. They have tried to integrate the open yet private space of single family homes with the density and convenience of an urban setting. The result is in the form of Parcel D, which is a lively and marvelous green space and housing structure developed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The design could amaze you by its specialized use of vegetated surfaces to blur the external form of this building so the residents could be offered a more intimate environment along with greener air to breathe in.

Picture Gallery Parcel D Urban Greenscape Housing/ Oppenheim Architecture + Design Parcel D is a unique package of 165 units that together share a large central courtyard. The interior greenscape of this structure is a micro climate in itself. Due to cool breezes and constant evapotranspiration, this micro climate offers residential space cooling through a decrease in airborne pollution. Its rainwater collection and storage system supports the water requirements to maintain the greenery. Additionally, this single-family support system gets a refreshing feel and look, with various operable windows, as well as through foliage-wrapped front and back balconies. For relaxation purposes, the Parcel D residents may visit an immediately accessible pool and beautifully created gardens. They also have access to several other utilities, including a gym, a cafe and a restaurant. There is a retail facility at the ground level, along with an efficient parking system that allows a spacious to-and-fro area for pedestrians within the complex. Parcel D is a good example of a green multi-facility housing structure. It is a step towards fulfilling the future single-family residential requirements within an increasingly urbanizing place like Puerto Rico. Via: eVolo |
Firefly : Constant and instant phototherapy for infants Posted: 19 Jan 2012 03:29 PM PST Nikonian Bar: Neonatal jaundice or hyperbilirubinemia jaundice is a condition that severely affects many newborns in developing and lesser developed countries. This is a condition in which the levels of bilirubin in the blood spikes up which could lead to hearing loss, brain damage, intellectual disabilities and behavioral problems. Bilirubin is the product formed when old blood cells are broken down in the body. During pregnancy, the bilirubin is removed through the placenta but after birth, the baby has to evolve its own mechanism for bilirubin elimination. It has been found that the dehydration caused in newborns due to large spacing between breast-feedings is an important cause of this jaundice. It has also been found that exposure to blue light with a wavelength of 420-448 nm helps in breaking down bilirubin to biliverdin thus treating neonatal jaundice. It is here that infant phototherapy via Firefly, a part of Design that Matters' (DnM’s) Newborn Technology Development program, comes into play.
Firefly
Phototherapy is not something radical and new. But the traditional method of treatment involved treating the baby to 5 hours of phototherapy after which a nurse carried the baby from NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) to the mother for breast-feeding. An hour or so later, the baby was again carried by the nurse to the NICU for five more hours of phototherapy. This cycle repeated. Nurses were also needed to check on the orientation of the baby so that it always received maximum exposure to the light. This increased the overhead expenses per baby in the rural hospitals and medical centers in poor countries.
Firefly was first introduced to treat jaundiced newborns in Vietnam. It arrives as a single-piece, removable, vacuum-formed bassinet which has its own blue-light source. The light source has been provided above and below that ensures that the newborn receives maximum and effective phototherapy regardless of its orientation. It even penetrates blankets and sheets. The device is so compact and robust that the doctors have no fears of installing it in the mother’s room itself. Thus, the transfer of the infant between the NICU and the mother is reduced. This in turn drastically increases the effectiveness of the treatment. Now, all that the mother has to do is feed the baby, which is by her side, at regular intervals. The periods of non-light are also reduced. Firefly also ensures that infections are eliminated since it can easily and quickly be disinfected. Also, since only one baby can occupy the Firefly at a time, the possibility of two or three infants being placed for simultaneous treatment ( as it used to happen traditionally) is eliminated. Thus, cross infections also do not occur. The price of the Firefly also, is aptly about one-third that of other phototherapy devices. The Firefly is a result of the collaboration between Design that Matters (DtM), Vietnamese manufacturer MTTS and the East Meets West Foundation (EMW). It is sure to usher in an era of improved and effective infant care when it comes to neonatal jaundice. Via: DesignThatMatters |
